Diosa esquimal SEDNA - SEDNA Inuit Goddess

English Version
SEDNA, INUIT GODDESS OF THE SEAS

This Goddess is part of the series of acrylic on board goddesses and measures 31.5 x 23.6 inchs. She will be exhibited in London in July on I-SHO I’s, Shes, Hers and Ours, Feminist Art Show, held in The Gallery and organized by 73 Women in the Arts.

My acrylic are based on ancient myths. I paint them to tell their stories, to bring them to present and deliver the cultural and spiritual richness of their worship. Beyond the religious beliefs of each, the mythology has collected over the centuries all cultural heritage and condensed it in their beliefs. So, as we see one of these goddesses in some way or another we know more about our own history.

In this case, the story of Sedna is one of the ones that deeply impressed me:

SEDNAS´S story began when her father married she with a gentleman, who happened to be a wicked witch or crow. Sedna weeped for his abuse and her cry reached the ears of her father who decided to rescue her in his kayak. During the escape the wizard generated a terrible storm that threatened to sink them both. His father understood that the witch wanted only his daughter and throwed her into the sea. But Sedna tried to get in the kayak again and to prevent it, her father hited or cuted her hands. Sedna sank in the sea and from her amputated hands and fingers all marine animals were born. The shamans say that when the sea is stormy or the fishing bad is it Sedna that is furious because she can´t comb her hair without hands. Then they fall to do her hair. Inuit hunters and fishermen live on the obligation of treating sea and women with respect.
